LADIES Senior Football Co. (MON. 30TH OCT 1989).
Austin Stacks 1-5; Beaufort 2-0.
It was our 4th Co. Senior Ladies Football Championship title and it happened on the October Bank Holiday Monday 1989 – 30 years ago on this date. The game was played in Castleisland against the then Co. Champions, Beaufort who had some formidable players at the time, including one of the all-time greats of Kerry football, Mary Jo Curran. But it was our all-time great, Marina Barry, who dominated the game for us and whose goal, mid-way through the second half, put us on the road to victory.
Both sides found scoring difficult in the opening period and fifteen minutes had elapsed before Beaufort opened the scoring with a goal. We responded well in the closing minutes of the half putting over two points before the break by Marina Barry from play and one from a free by Del Whyte, which left the mid Kerry side ahead by one at half time (1-0 to 0-2).
Another Marina Barry point early in the second half levelled matters for the first time but mid-way through the half Beaufort got through for their second goal. However our girls never panicked and shortly after we drew level again when Lily Moloney’s shot for goal was saved by the Beaufort keeper but the ever-alert Marina was there to usher the breaking ball over the line. We dominated the remainder of the game, holding the opposition scoreless while adding two more points ourselves by Lily Moloney and Del Whyte which was the difference between the sides at the end. There were great scenes afterwards when team captain, Claire Connolly received the winning Cup and lead us back to Tralee for more celebrations in our then very new Clubhouse (officially opened earlier that year – 3rd June 1989).
