It was with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the passing of Marie Nix née Slattery after a long illness borne with great courage & dignity. Marie who hailed from Monavalley along with her brothers Ger & John all played football with the club. Marie was part of our very successful Senior Ladies team in the late 80’s and early 90’s winning two Senior Football Co. Championship medals with the club in 1989 and 1993 (see pages 142 and 143 of our Centenary Book). Marie is remembered as a resolute corner back who always gave 100% in every match. She was a nurse by profession and like many of her generation headed to Australia in 1994 before returning to work as a Theatre Nurse in both UHK and the Bons Secour Hospital. When her own children started playing football Marie got involved in the game again becoming an active member of the Kerins O’Rahilly Ladies Club & coaching many underage teams.
Austin Stacks GAA Club wishes to extend our sympathy to her husband John & children Stephen & Katie, her father Anthony, her brothers Ger & John and the extended Slattery family including her 2 nephews Jack & Tadgh Slattery who both play with the club, to the Nix family including our Club Secretary Elma Nix, to her former Austin Stacks Ladies Club team mates and to all at Kerins O’Rahilly’s Ladies Club. May she rest in peace.
Marie’s funeral will take place on Monday –
