Molyneaux Cup Final: Dr. Crokes 2-10; Austin Stacks 1-8.
We got off to the best of starts in this Co. Championship Final (Molyneaux Cup) at the Currans Centre of Excellence on this Thursday night (12th Sept) with Ciarán O’Connell and Cathal O’Reilly winning the throw-in which ended with Donagh McKivergan putting over after 43 seconds. Both sides then had opportunities before Brandon Patterson intercepted a dangerous Crokes move, passed to Pa McCarthy who put over our second point inside the 7th minute.
Crokes then dominated the rest of the half, adding seven points without reply before Gearóid Sheehan put over the last score of the half after good work by Andrew Morrissey and Donagh McKivergan. This left us four points in arrears at the break (0-7 to 0-3).
The second half started like the first with Ciarán O’Connell winning the throw-in and putting Donagh McKivergan through for the opening point after 25 seconds. But in the next two minutes Crokes looked like they had wrapped up this game when they added a goal and a point to put them seven clear at that stage. But we rallied again, and points by Donagh McKivergan and Pa McCarthy and a brilliant 43rd minute goal by Gearóid Fitzgerald cut the Crokes lead to just two points. Crokes responded then with points in the 50th and 53rd minutes and then a minute later they put this game out of our reach with their second goal. The last two scores of the game came from Gearóid Sheehan but it was too little too late from our point of view and our black and amber colleagues were deserving winners on the night.
