Junior Co. League Listowel Emmets 5-12 (27); Austin Stacks 3-15 (24).
Did it ever happen before that we scored 3 goals and 15 points in a game and didn’t come out winners? Well that’s what happened in round 4 of the Co. League played in Listowel on this Friday evening (5th July). We led by eight points after the first eleven minutes (2-2 to no score). The home side had reduced our half time lead to two points (3-6 to 2-7). Eleven minutes into the second half we were seven ahead (3-11 to 2-7). Seventeen minutes into the second half we had extended that margin to nine (3-15 to 2-9) and looked to be heading for a certain victory. But between then and full time we failed to score again while Listowel added three goals and three points to give them their first victory of the season with three points to spare.
And it wasn’t that we played poorly as all 18 had some excellent patches of play throughout the hour. But we seemed to lose concentration at times, especially towards to end of both halves. As in previous games Danny Roche and David Courtney were outstanding up front but on this evening another man caught the eye and that was David Leonard who had swapped his usual number 3 jersey for number 14 on this occasion and it paid dividends, big time, with David scoring two brilliant first half goals. Danny was our other first half goal-scorer. But no single individual could be blamed for our collapse in those closing 13 minutes of the game. So now we have to put this ordeal behind us as we prepare for the last round of the League which will be against John Mitchels on Friday week next (19th July).
