SENIOR HURLING: Austin Stacks 1-10; Abbeydorney 5-15.
After receiving a walk-over from Kenmare in round one and with Ballyheigue, who were to be our opponents in round 2, pulling out of the competition, our Hurlers eventually got their Co. League (Div 2A) campaign off the ground in a wet Connolly Park on last Wednesday evening (14th June). And the fact that we were without competitive action for the past six weeks certainly had an effect on our performance. We trailed by 1-9 to 0-2 at half time (our opening point coming from Killian O’Riordan after just nine seconds of play, and our second coming from a David Walsh free close to half time).
We then conceded three quick goals in succession straight after the restart. But after that we got to grips with the situation and between then and full time we outscored the opposition by 1-8 to 1-6. All our points, bar one, came from Michael O’Leary (four frees) with Killian O’Riordan scoring the other one. Our goal, the last score of the game, came when another Michael O’Leary free dropped into the goalmouth and Rory Forbes flicked it to the net.
It was good to see Seán King and Rory making their season’s debut and also good to see Kenneth O’Sullivan back in a Black & Amber jersey for the first time since July 2009.
Likewise it was good to see Andrew Foley at the game. Andrew had his successful operation last Friday following the recent injury he picked up when playing with the Hurlers.
Team: Paul Daly, Kevin O’Leary, Seán King, Ian Moynihan, Eamon Browne, Eoghan McKivergan, Andrew Morrissey (Capt), Johnny Downey, Kieran McCaughley, David Walsh (0-1 free), Killian O’Riordan (0-2), Rory Forbes (1-0), Jason Conway, Kenneth O’Sullivan, Michael O’Leary (0-7 – four frees).
Subs used: Tadhg Meehan (37m), Terry Desmond (38m).
The remaining two rounds of the Co. League are fixed for the following Wednesdays – R4 away to Kilgarvan (21st June) and R5 at home to Dr. Crokes (28th June).
