CAID FAOI 12: (i) It was a truly wonderful sight to behold in the Nuns’ Field on Sunday afternoon as our U12 stars finally got their much-interrupted season underway with a set of challenge matches against our age-old rivals, the Kerins-O’Rahilly Club. The great desire for footballing action has been very evident in this group since our return to play and this was epitomised by the very large turnout on Sunday….42 players in total togged out and every player had at least 20 minutes of action on the field. Our ‘on-the-age’ team got off to a flying start; playing with the breeze against an understrength Strand Road ‘A’ team; they played a brilliant first half of fast flowing Rockie football. Any concerns that the large number of substitutions and changes at half time would impact on the team’s performance in aghaidh na gaoithe were quickly put to bed with a similarly strong opening show in the 2nd half. What was most pleasing for the coaches was the consistency of the performance throughout the whole 50 minutes and how well the five debutants, Alex Relihan, Aodhán Horgan, Max Grzybowski, Ciarán Skinner and Darragh Greyson, played in their first outing in the Black’n’Amber. Cúigear imreoirí maithe! Welcome aboard the SS Rockie, young men! Níl an t-aistear (voyage) ach ag tosú! Our Under 11 charges were equally as keen as their elders to get their delayed season off to a bright start and didn’t disappoint with a five-star display against their town rivals. One seasoned observer remarked afterwards that the passing and support play from our younger charges was as good as he has witnessed at a juvenile level. High praise indeed! The coaching team was delighted with the attitude and hunger shown by all players across both teams and the group can look forward with confidence to their upcoming county league campaign. Many thanks to the Kerins-O’Rahilly Club for what proved to be a very useful pair of challenge games for both clubs before the commencement of the county league next Sunday (19th).
