We will welcome Ballymac U10s & 8’s to Connolly Park for some challenge games on Sunday June 9th.
U12 Girls Co. League Div 1: On Tuesday we made the short journey to Abbeydorney for our much anticipated third game of the year against them. After a nail biting draw in Connolly Park in the North Kerry League & a thrilling win in the final a few weeks later this third meeting would provide a roller coaster of emotions for the large crowd present, even a Speed Van turned up outside the Abbeydorney Complex, hopefully with the camera pointing towards the pitch !!! The hosts started with all guns blazing on a tight pitch with 1-1 before Ciara Laide & Chloe O Sullivan both pointed twice. Kara Kirby & Grace O Donnell both hit the net with Abbeydorney replying with two goals before Chloe pointed again from an impossible angle.
Kara then added 1-1 with the goal being a typical super strike from her through a crowd of defenders. Chloe added a point which was our last score of the half. The Abbeydorney girls never give up though & scored 1-1 just before the halftime whistle to leave the score Stacks 3-7 Abbeydorney 4-2. Grace O Donnell was causing all sorts of problems at full-forward & battled through out despite carrying an injury into the game. The hosts upped their game & scored their fifth goal to put them ahead again & then hit a purple patch pointing six times before Chloe added two for us. Grace again goaled to give us a lifeline with the score now 5-8 to 4-9 in favour of the hosts with minutes remaining. A pass into the edge of the square was brilliantly won by Ashling Browne who laid on a pass to the oncoming Grace O Donnell & she found the top corner of the net with a rocket to send the Rockies supporters wild. There was still time for more drama as one last attack for the home side saw our goalkeeper Aoife Begley save a goal bound shot to give our brave girls a one point victory. FT 5-9 V 5-8.
Great credit goes to both teams on another terrific display & Abbeydorney can count themselves a little unlucky not to at least draw. Special mention also to Amy Stack Lean who played even though a little under the weather & Grace O Donnell for battling on. Also to Lucy O Connor who gave a display of high fielding to grace any pitch in the country. Get well soon to Jacinta Griffin who picked up a nasty injury right at the end of the game & we hope to see her back playing soon.
On Tuesday (May 21st) we travelled to Glenflesk for our last County League group game.
U12 Girls Co. League Rose Hotel Co. League Div 1 Glenflesk 3-5 Austin Stacks 2-8
The Austin Stacks U12 girls bus rolled into scenic Glenflesk last Tuesday night for a final round league game in Division 1 of the County. Down 3 points with as many minutes left, it looked like curtains for the young footballers of Rock Street, but two frees by Grace O’Donnell brought it back to one. You could cut the tension with a knife, that is, if you chose to do so instead of killing a few midges, who were swarming like the Glenfelsk girls were swarming our attackers. But cometh the hour, cometh the players, and up stepped Amy Stack Leen and Lucy O’Connor combining for an equalising point for the ages. Final score a draw, Glenflesk 3-5, Austin Stacks 2-8. This leaves the Rockettes on 7 points with 3 wins, a draw and one loss, qualifying the girls for a final, depending on other results. So well done to all the players. The game was played on a beautiful evening, surrounded by spectacular scenery, on a perfectly manicured surface at Glenflesk’s designated juvenile pitch, with Stacks ending the half first half two points to the good. However, the local blue and gold Glenflesk girls scored two spectacular goals and some great points to edge them ahead until the spirited Stacks sisters got to grips with the sweeper and the blanket defence being employed by the locals. If Brian Cody had been on holidays and peered in, he would have recognised the lack of frees in the game from the renowned Kilkenny in house training games where no whistle was used. Considering the heat and the fact that most of the girls had played school games earlier, it was a remarkable achievement to show such resolve when it mattered most. Captains Ciara Laide and Amy Scanlon showed superb leadership throughout and the efforts of Kate Sugrue, Emily Flynn, Ella Moore and Lucy O’Connor were nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to all the supporters who made the journey eastwards to cheer on this talented and hardworking squad. Hard luck to a strong Glenflesk team who did their club proud. Beidh lá eile.
