Munster Senior Ladies Intermediate QF FT Austin Stacks 3-6 (15) Burren Gaels 2-8 (14) Played in Kilrush last Sunday morning, Stacks went into the game without the services of injured Kerry player Laura Rogers who was replaced by Maebh Mc Kivergan on the starting 15. Facing a gale force wind in the first half we got off to a flyer with 2 early points before the Clare team settled and had raced into a 2 point lead after 15 minutes 0-2 to 0-4. Stacks fought back well and levelled the scores 0-4 a piece after 22 minutes. A cracking goal by Stacks Mollie O’Carroll just before the half time whistle gave Stacks the lead 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval. Right from the re-start the Bureen Gaels team had us on the back foot when they were awarded and duly converted a penalty kick. Clare Brennan was introduced for Deirdre O’Shea. 10 minutes gone in the 2nd half the Clare side had extended their lead 1-5 to 1-7 when Sarah Hoare was introduced for Caoimhe Barry Walsh. Mid way through the 2nd half just a point separated the sides and a goal by the evergreen Marina Barry Walsh looked like it might give Stacks a platform on which to build but it was quickly cancelled out by a goal from Burren Gaels leaving the scores 2-6 to 2-7 in favour of the Clare side. The writing looked on the wall as the Clare side extended their lead 2-6 to 2-8 with 5 minutes remaining. But credit the Stacks girls who dug deep and just like in the 1st half it was 17 year old Mollie O’Carroll who was on hand to score what was a winning goal and give the Stacks that all important one point win. Scorers for Stacks: Ellen O’Connell, Maeve McKivergan, Karina Quilter 1 pt each; Megan O’Brien 2 pts; Marina Barry Walsh 1-1; Mollie O’Carroll 2-0. The team will now face Kinsale in the Munster Semi Final next weekend – no fixture at time of writing so check club website for update. This will be another step up for the team who were defeated heavily by the same opposition in the Munster Junior Competition last year. We wish team and mentors all the best for this weekend. 1977 Ladies Reunion – our thanks to Adrienne Mc Loughlin for the following report on the evening: Austin Stacks Ladies celebrated the 40th anniversary of their 1977 Co. Championship win over Castleisland Desmonds at a function in Connolly Park on Saturday 30th September. Most of the team were in attendance for the buffet meal and medal presentation which was organised in the main by Ann O’Callaghan Eager and Noreen Power. (The idea for the reunion was suggested by Anne Naughton Slattery, a player of that team of 1977.) Chairman of the Kerry Ladies Board back in 1977 was Mick Fitzgerald from Castleisland, and he presented the players with their commemorative medals. The trainer of the Austin Stacks Ladies team, the late Moss Carroll, was represented by his son, Kevin Carroll. Club Chairman, Liam Lynch and Ladies Chairperson, Noreen Power gave fitting speeches, and Ann Eager regaled the 1977 team with her memories of the individual players characteristics and football prowess, to the enjoyment of all present. A night of reminiscing continued, with music provided by the D.J. Francie Breen. Many thanks to the hospitality committee for superb food and refreshments.
