U12 Girls: Another busy week with another round of Co. League games for both our teams in Div 1 and Div 4. In Div 1 we entertained Cromane at Connolly Park . FT Austin Stacks 2-15 v Cromane 1-03. Report by Maurice Mac Namara: On the first real Summers evening of the year in Connolly Park our U12s registered a win against an accomplished Cromane team in front of a large crowd basking in the sunshine. Driven on by strong players in the spine of the team, full back, centre back and midfield the skillful forwards in black and amber put up 1-06 in the first half while Cromane struggled to convert possession into scores, they were well served by a very skillful and strong running midfield but the Stacks backs dominated their forwards and restricted Cromane to 2 points going in at half time. In the second half the game really opened up but the pattern remained the same, Stacks taking their scores and Cromane just failing to convert, as the half progressed the Stacks full back came into midfield and her strength on the ball ensured that the influence of Cromanes really fine combination was curbed. The Stacks half forwards scored some excellent points in this period and took the game away from their mid kerry opponents. Cromane rallied after scoring a goal but the final scores all came from the Stacks forwards plus a beautiful score from Lucy O’Donnell who has made huge improvements to her game through the season. Thanks to Cromane for traveling up and we wish them a great day today as they were going on their school tour at five this morning. To be honest Stacks were a little wasteful with their chances but it would be churlish not to be happy with such a fabulous bunch of girls who seem to be really enjoying their football journey together.
Our 12 Div 4 girls played away to John Mitchels last Tuesday (May 22nd) FT John Mitchels 7-7 Stacks 1-3.
This week in Div 4 we played at home to Killarney Legion last evening (Tuesday May 29th) and our very young side who staged a great comeback in the 2nd half were most unfortunate to lose by the minimum FT Stacks 3-3 Legion 1-10. Our Div 1 & Div 4 teams will both play away to Southern Gaels on Bank Holiday Monday June 4th – match details tbc so keep an eye out for text.
U14 Girls: We have 2 remaining games to be played away to Inbhear Scéine Gaels and home to Cromane. Our games V Cromane goes ahead at 7pm this Bank Holiday Monday June 4th. There was disappointment for the Kerry U14s featuring club players Clodagh Murray, Heather Mac Namara & Grace O’Mahoney who were defeated by Dublin in the All Ireland Semi Final last Sunday May 27th FT Dublin 3-11 Kerry 3-5. Hard luck girls.
U16 Girls: We take a break from training now until the exams are over. Geno has very kindly invited any U16s who wish to keep ticking over to join in the senior ladies team training sessions at 7pm on Tuesdays & Fridays & 10am Sunday mornings so keep on eye on texts for updates on these sessions. We wish Club & Kerry U16 player Aoife Dillane & her Kerry team mates the best of luck in the AI Semi Final V Kildare on Wednesday June 4th at 7.30pm in Tipperary.
Ciara Ryan: Austin Stacks Club player Ciara Ryan was the only female to complete the Kerry GAA referee foundation course earlier this year. We are delighted to let you know that Ciara officiated her first game on behalf of Austin Stacks at John Mitchels club last Sunday evening and did an excellent job. Well done Ciara.
Senior Ladies: We played a thrilling Co. League encounter V Scartaglin in Connolly Park last Friday May 24th. Report by: Gene O’Donnell. What a match, what a contest! 2-11 to 3-8 was the final score, but the relenting, energy sapping flow of the game was a joy to behold as every single player gave everything in 18 degrees on a beautifully manicured Connolly Park. Both teams enjoyed their own distinctive purple patches,. Despite a nervy start, Scartaglin raced into a five point lead just before half time, 2-3 to Austin Stacks 0-5 points and early in the second half, they extended this lead to 8 points with a rocket of a penalty, just beating the outstretched fingertips of the outstanding stand in Rock Street goalkeeper, Jemma O’Connell.
Full back for Scartaglin, Sarah O’Sullivan was a rock at the heart of the maroon jerseyed defence and she was ably assisted by a formidable half back line of Meabh Young, Katie Sugrue and Dani Reidy. Sarah Hoare for Austin Stacks at centre back had a monumental duel with Denise Dunlea all through and such was the quality of their contest both players would get top marks in their player ratings despite being direct opponents, such was the spirit and pace of the game.
Down 8 points, with tired legs on both sides on a big pitch, it looked done and dusted for the visitors. However, led by the swashbuckling Mollie O’Carroll and the midfield pairing of Abi Casey and Aoife Dillane (with a combined age of just over 30!), the black and amber women showed their indominatable spirit, somehow clawing their way back into the game to actually lead by 1 point with only a few minutes remaining.
Excellent referee Frank McLoughlin, who must have covered 10k in this enthralling fast paced game signalled two minutes to go to the respective management teams. Turnovers, spills, tension and some incredible skills under immense pressure by both teams filled these crucial end game moments.
Without doubt, the score of the match was executed by Scartgalin’s Aoife Dunlea who split the posts after a lung bursting run to the relief of the visiting supporters and admittedly to the admiration of the appreciative home following. Well done to both clubs and wishing a speedy recovery to the two Scartaglin players who picked up knocks, which thankfully were not as serious as originally thought.
The final word must go to congratulate the field committee of Austin Stacks for having the pitch in such excellent condition and the electronic scoreboard greatly added to the occasion.
