U12 Girls Co. League Div 1 Rd 1: Firies 4-6 Austin Stacks 2-7: Austin Stacks U12’s suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of a relentless Firies outfit in Farranfore last Thursday, 25th April on a score line of 4-6 to 2-7. This, despite the best efforts of Player of the match and captain Chloe O’Sullivan who was a constant thorn in the side of the home team. Other players to shine for the Rock included Maeve Trant, Amber Ryan, Lucy O’Connor, Amy Stack Leen, Belle McDonagh, Amy Scanlon, Ciara Laide and Ella Moore. Stacks played with the hill in the first half and led at the interval by 5 points. Two unstoppable goals in the final quarter by a committed Firies team ensured that they won the spoils. Stacks can hold their heads up high as, even when things did not go their way, they kept playing their attractive brand of open attacking football right to the end. All 22 players got valuable game time and the experience will surely stand to them all as they build to the future. Referee: John Ross. Finally, and, most importantly, everyone at Austin Stacks Ladies club sends their best wishes to young Firies player Roisín Collins with her upcoming treatment in Germany.
U12 Girls Co. League Div 1 Rd 2 Austin Stacks 3-8 Southern Gales 2-5: With the Easter holidays now a memory, the Stacks U12’s girls got back on the bandwagon with a home second round County League fixture versus the famed Southern Gaels. Picking from footballing strongholds such as St. Mary’s Cahirciveen, Renard, St. Michael’s/Foilmore, Skellig Rangers, Valentia, Derrynane, Dromid Pearses, Waterville and Sneem, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the young Rock Street girls. Played in Connolly Park, parents and supporters were treated to a feast of football. Judging by the raucous rendition of “Happy Birthday” for Kaja Huserova in the dressing room, the black and amber girls were really up for it and at the end of a free flowing encounter Stacks emerged with the two points on a score line of 3-8 to 2-5. Joint captains Jacinta Griffin and Amy Stack Leen showed great leadership throughout the game and were ably assisted by Lucy O’Connor, Grace O’Donnell, Ella Moore, Kara Kirby and Maeve Trant. Once again, Aoife Begley was outstanding between the posts and players such as Amber Ryan, Kate Sugrue, Aoibhe Kilgallen, Emily Flynn and Jocelyn Cushen were peerless. Others to catch the eye were Belle McDonagh, Clodagh Moore, Aisling Browne who made a cameo appearance in goals, Rita Feeley and dual star Lauren Cotter. An outstanding feature of the match was the versatile and match winning performance by Ciara Laide. We wish Rachel Barry, our All Ireland Gymnastics champion a speedy recovery from her recent injury. Referee: George O’Donnell.
U12 Girls Co. League Div 1 Rd 3 Austin Stacks 4-4 Fossa 1-5 – Louise Ni Mhuireartaigh herself would have been proud of the finish by Fossa’s Brooke Lynch with a last minute top corner goal to rival anything you would see in Fitzgerald Stadium or Croke Park. Austin Stacks joint Captain Aoife Begley’s clean sheet was not to be but in fairness the shot was unstoppable. While the other joint captain Ella Moore put in a fantastic versatile performance in the middle third of the pitch. After an extremely fast paced game at Connolly Park, the Rock girls took the honours, but make no mistake, the scoreline did not do this hard working, speedy and skillful Fossa side enough justice. Half time AS 2-2 Fossa 0-2, Full Time AS 4-4 Fossa 1-5. The ball was moved up and down the field at a relentless rate and those watching were treated to a spectacle of passing, team play, catching, blocking and scoring of the highest standard. There is little doubt that many of these players on both sides will go on to become teammates in the green and gold, Hard luck to an impressive and well coached Fossa team. Beidh la eile.
