We couldn’t have got off to a better start in this 4th round of the Co. League played at Strand Road on this Saturday evening (3rd June) when, after just 26 seconds, Jack O’Shea’s good run put Alan Duggan through for a simple goal. However by the 12th minute O’Rahillys had leveled matters with four points from play, with our only point in that period coming in the 9th minute from Shane O’Callaghan.
Then in the 13th minute Pa McCarthy put us ahead again with a nice point, only for the Strand Road boys to take control once more and, in the space of four minutes, put over four more points. Then in the final ten minutes of the half we put over four ourselves – two by Mikey Collins and one each by Denis McElligott and Michael O’Donnell. This left us ahead by one at half time (1-6 to 0-8).
Just before the break we went down to 14 men and that, together with a black card received in the 8th minute, certainly affected our second half performance. In that second half we could only muster two more points – one in the 35th minute from a Shane O’Callaghan free and the second in the 57th minute by Michael O’Donnell from play. In the meantime O’Rahillys went on the score a further eight points, as they had done in the first half, to give them a five points winning margin at the end.
While it’s a bit early to talk about relegation, that’s where we find ourselves now on the League table (in the bottom three), so early in the competition.
It was good to see John Murphy making his Co. League debut with the Senior team (he did make his Senior debut in August 2015 in a Town League game) and he performed very well all through.
Team: David Hennessy, Barry Walsh, Fearghal MacNamara, Denis Costello, John Murphy, Jack O’Shea, Jack Morgan, Shane Carroll, Michael O’Donnell (0-2), Denis McElligott (0-1), Greg Horan, Pa McCarthy (0-1, David Mannix, Alan Duggan (1-0), Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-2 – one free).
Subs used: Michael Collins (8m) (0-2), Darragh Scanlon (55m), Dale Counihan (55m).
For the next four weeks we are scheduled to play four more rounds of the Co. League – at home on next Saturday (10th June) to St. Marys; away the following week (w/e 18th June) to Templenoe; then on Saturday, 24th June at home to Dr. Crokes in the postponed round 1 game (although, as we write, we understand that this may not go ahead on that date) and finally on Saturday, 1st July (the evening before the Munster SF & MF Finals) at home to Dingle.
