SENIOR FOOTBALL: This season’s Town League Final (for the John Kissane Cup) will be between ourselves and Ballymac. As we write it is scheduled to go ahead on this Friday night (1st March) at 7.30pm in Austin Stack Park. Then on the following week-end (w/e 10th March) the Co. League commences when we will be welcoming the new All Ireland Intermediate Champions (Kilcummin) to Connolly Park.
MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 4-9; Ballymac 3-12.
Played in almost summer-like conditions in Connolly Park on last Saturday afternoon (23rd Feb) this 3rd and final round of the Town League ended all square after an hour of some very entertaining football. Both sides had periods of dominance throughout the game with the lead changing hands on at least five different occasions. With three minutes remaining in the first half we found ourselves down by eight points. At that stage we had only two points on the board – the first coming in the 4th minute from Mark Holden and the other in the 16th minute from Seán Quilter. But a good finish to the half, which produced a point each from Dara Barry Walsh and Seán Quilter and a well-taken goal on the stroke of half time by Daniel O’Rourke, saw us three adrift at the break (1-7 to 1-4).
Daniel was on target again straight from the throw-in with a point after 22 seconds. Then from the kick-out Dara Barry Walsh sent in a long perfect pass to Conor Myers who put over. Ballymac had their first point of the half in the 35th minute but then a minute later a brilliant move by our lads saw Daniel O’Rourke’s pass palmed to the net by Mark Holden to put us in the lead for the first time in the game (2-6 to 1-8). Ballymac, however, were in no mood to give in and in the next five minutes they found themselves four points to the good again after scoring 1-2 without reply. But then it was our turn again to dominate and during the next 13 minutes we scored 2-2 which now gave our boys a four points lead. Our two goals came from our two centre-field men, Seán Quilter and Eoghan Carroll with Conor Myers the scorer of our two points.
But credit to Ballymac they never gave up and in the 56th minute they scored their 3rd and the game’s 7th goal. A minute later Conor Myers extended our lead again to two but, surprise, surprise back came Ballymac with two points from frees in the closing minutes to level the game and ensure that, deservingly, both sides got a share of the spoils.
With two wins and a draw over our three round robin games we have now qualified for the final for the eight season in a row.
