Senior Town Championship Semi Final: Kerins O’Rahillys 4-17; Austin Stacks 1-9.
The semi final of the Town Championship, between ourselves and Kerins O’Rahillys, went ahead at a showery and windy Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening (9th Sept) and for the second year in a row we lost to the same opposition at the same stage of the competition.
Despite playing with the aid of the strong wind in the first half we trailed by two points at the break (1-8 to 1-6). Both sides were level on three points each at the end of the first quarter – Seán Ryan and Pa McCarthy from play and a pointed free by David Mannix on target for us.
The first indication that this was not going to be our day came in the 20th minute when Rahillys got through for the first of their four goals. They added a further five points in the next eight minutes while we could only muster one point in that period, from full back Darragh Scanlon who was making regular runs up-field throughout the game but didn’t benefit from enough passes when in good positions.
We did have a good finish to the half with a goal and two points coming in the three added minutes. First a quickly taken free by Shane Carroll found Greg Horan in space and Greg’s perfectly-placed ball found the net. A minute later Alan Duggan pointed from play and on the stroke of half time David Mannix put over a free after he himself was fouled.
Now with the aid of the elements Rahillys took complete control of the second half and in the 18 minutes after the resumption had scored 3-5 without reply. Our first score of the half came after twenty minutes, from another David Mannix free, and we added only two more points between then and full time – Shane Carroll and Michael O’Donnell on target – while the Strand Road boys added four more to leave them with a whopping seventeen points to spare at the end, and put them into their fifth Town Championship final in succession.
One positive from the game, from our point of view, was the return from injury, after an almost three month’s absence, of Fearghal McNamara.
