Round 1 (last 16) of Co. Club Championship (Cup Section) went ahead in Moyvane on Monday evening (19th Aug) and after a pulsating contest, that went to extra time (84 minutes of football), we progressed to the quarter finals by the narrowest of margins. It looked early on that we might run away with this contest when we led by five points to no score after seven minutes. And even though the home side came more into the game in the second quarter, we still maintained our impressive start when we led by six at half time (0-11 to 0-5).
That was still the margin between the sides as the game entered the last ten minutes (1-15 to 1-9 – Joseph O’Kelly our goalscorer in the 43rd minute after a brilliant incisive run by Greg Horan) but Moyvane/Tarbert put in a storming finish, scoring 1-3 without reply to take the game to extra time (1-15 to 2-12).
But it was in that period that our lads really showed their true potential and leadership qualities. Four minutes into extra time we found ourselves behind by two for the first time in the game, but rallied again to draw level at half time (1-17 to 2-14). We were behind again by one with just four minutes to go and it was then that we really dug deep, defending superbly and attacking in droves. First Kyle Fitzgibbon brought us level again with a pointed free and then Kieran Flanagan (who was one of the two seventeen olds on the panel that evening) coolly put over the winner.
Before and during the game we had to overcome adversity. We were missing a number of players from our previous game, including Ciarán O’Connell, who picked up an injury with the Seniors on Sunday. Then with four minutes to go in ordinary time goalkeeper, Paddy Fitzgibbon, had to retire with an injury and David O’Sullivan had to go in goals but it didn’t unnerve David as he played superbly between the sticks.
But in truth all 17 who played were stars on the day and very few will quibble if we single out Kyle Fitzgibbon for an outstanding display of point taking. Fourteen points from fourteen efforts – not a single wide. In fact in those 84 minutes of play we only had four wides in total and just nine by the opposition.
Well done to both sides for such brilliant entertainment.
